6 In theory, a smaller wheel is stronger than a bigger wheel if hub and rim section are the same. This is largely due to the length of the spoke and it's contributions to the stiffness/flex vs spoke braking force. Whether the difference between a 27.5 wheel and a 29 wheel is in of itself enough to mean a real world differe, I don't think so.

So if you moved up to 29 inches and a 12 speed, you'd use a 32 teeth chainring to get about the same gear ratio/inches--that would yield .714 gear ratio and 18.6 gear inches.

My guess is you’d get the most season round enjoyment from a plus bike that could do 27.5x3 or narrower 29 and just give up riding the muckiest days of the year for better performance most of the time. But if your climate calls for lots of very wet rides a 4+ would be the beat choice.
