In what became and unexpected successor in the Hoka One One trail running lineup, the Speedgoat 2 dethroned the Challenger ATR last year as clearly Hoka’s best trail running shoe. This year brings us the new Speedgoat 3 was well as a new version of the Challenger ATR. Does it still hold the title is the question.
Complete with a wider midsole and toe box, the Speedgoat 3 has enhanced heel support and midfoot lockdown in the upper as well as “seatbelt” support on each side. Hoka wisely left a good thing unchanged in the Speedgoat 3, and then again in the EVO Speedgoat. Given that this is a partial-coverage outsole, with areas of exposed midsole foam, there may be shoes with grippier and/or more durable outsoles than the Speedgoat but there’s nothing to touch the combination of cushion and traction at this weight.
Closing Thoughts. The Hoka One One Speedgoat 3 is an amazing max-cushion trail shoe that can handle long days on the trail, but also go fast when its needed. At $140, the Speedgoat 3 comes in at the higher end of pricing for trail shoes. I think the Speedgoat 3 is a great buy though, as I’ve found the midsole and outsole to hold up very well.
